Chattanooga Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Will repellents get a groundhog out of the shed or porch

Pest animals especially groundhogs can be very destructive and cause havoc in the property where they choose to dwell. Groundhogs can significantly weaken the foundations of a porch or a shed in case they choose to build their dens around.

Due to underground digging, the safety of the den or porch structure gets reduced greatly involving a lot of physical harm to people around in case of an accident

Moreover, groundhogs dig around and create various exist points to their den in a very unsightly way. This suggests that as soon as you find one living around you, you must take precautions and measures to evacuate the animal quickly.

Indeed, it seems very reliable and suitable to simply put a repellant near the den of the animal in order to make it run away. This sounds very simple, and straightforward. However, using a repellant may or may not work and could completely be a waste of time in instances.

Though at times repellants do work and since this is not an expensive possible solution, you do not lose anything if you try.

Killing a groundhog in order to get rid of it is not at all an option. This is because even if you end up killing one, another groundhog will take its place very soon and hence, the problem persists. Moreover, you would not want to get the blood of innocent animals on your hands, would you? So using a repellant might be a suitable option to drive them away without killing or harming them.

You may try using the below-mentioned repellants and see what works:

Consider making use of natural predators that hunt groundhogs. This method, however, may involve the killing of the animal. Moreover, in case the lucky animal does not get caught, it will most likely leave the place to avoid the risk of getting killed. In case you simply want to scare it away, you can place some dog poop near their den entrances or dog/cat hair to alarm them. As a result of this, the animal may simply move away.

Groundhogs tend to live in dry burrows. So putting up a water sprinkler near their den will force them out to look for a new dry place.

Animals and even a big number of humans hate Habanero pepper as it quite hot. You may sprinkle significant amounts of this spice around the dens of groundhogs forcing them to pack up and move. This is because this pepper makes it difficult for them to breath and also carries a burning effect on the nose and eyes of the animal.

Groundhogs are introverted animals. They like and enjoy their privacy. So in case, there is too much disturbance around, they are likely to get repelled. Consider putting up noisy equipment around their dens and see them leave in no time.

While these methods of repelling them may work or may not, depending on a case to case basis. However, they can be tried without a lot of investment so giving it a try is certainly not a bad deal. In case the problem persists, you may want to contact an animal control company to take care of the problem for you.
